Course Outline

What is Unconscious Bias?

  • What is Unconscious Bias?
  • Unconscious bias is a set of automatic responses, triggered by our brains, that make quick judgements and assessments of people, scenarios and information.

  • The Affinity Bias
  • We all want to feel comfortable with the people we gather around ourselves. Of course we do. This feeling of comfort is connected to our Affinity Bias.

  • The Halo Effect
  • The Halo effect is an unconscious bias based on attractiveness.

  • Confirmation Bias
  • You will decide in 7 seconds if you like someone or not. After that, your confirmation bias will kick in.

  • Conformity
  • Conformity gives us rules and helps create society and culture. But it can also stop us making choices that diverge from our group’s usual behaviour.

How it Changes You

  • Privilege
  • Before you can be fully inclusive as a leader of others, you must be absolutely frank with yourself about the advantages or disadvantages you’ve faced in your own life.

  • Micro Aggressions
  • Micro-aggressions are brief, everyday exchanges that subtly demean an individual, group, society or culture.

  • The Influence of In-Group
  • We’re much more likely to have positive views towards a member of a group we think we belong to, than towards someone from a group we don’t think we’re part of.

  • The Influence of Out-Group
  • Out-Group Bias is your unconscious view of everybody outside your In-Group. You are more likely to perceive those outside it in a negative light.

What Can We Do?

  • Reflect on Your Inner Voice
  • It’s important that we’re open and inclusive as a leader of others and vital we’re tolerant of our own failings and don’t lapse into self-sabotage.

  • Look Around You
  • Diversity is an immensely important and challenging issue within business. The battle starts with your actions.

  • Raise Awareness
  • The more conscious our decision making, the more possibilities we’ll have to be genuinely inclusive as leaders and as people.

Actions

  • Actions
  • We've helped raise your awareness of what unconscious bias is and how it can prevent you from being the inclusive leader you want to be. Now though, is the time for action.
